A three year PhD home/EU fees only studentship (funded by the Textile
Conservation Foundation) is available within the College of Arts at the
University of Glasgow. The core research theme is "The Making and Materials of
Victorian Commercial Stage Sets: Normansfield A Case Study". The student will
be jointly supervised by Christina Young and Karen Thompson. The theme draws
upon the research interests of both supervisors and in doing so provides a
natural bridge between Technical Art History and Painted Textiles Conservation.
The research will help to underpin the future conservation of Normansfield
Victorian Theatre in Teddington
(https://langdondowncentre.org.uk/scenery/<https://www.findaphd.com/common/clickCount.aspx?theid=88360&type=184&DID=1853&url=https%3a%2f%2flangdondowncentre.org.uk%2fscenery%2f>)
but also contributes towards the wider understanding of the profession of the
scenic artist working in traditional materials. There will be plenty of room
within the theme for the student to develop their own directions of original
research. Start date: January 2018.

The student would need to finance bench fees (£1500 over three years) plus
their living expenses. In the first instance applicants should email
(christina.yo...@glasgow.ac.uk) a short CV, a transcript of qualifications to
date (and anticipated results if you are still studying for your Masters), 2
references (at least 1 should be academic) and 1000 word proposal highlighting
what they can bring to the research y 30th Sept. 2017.
