I did some additional tests and it seems that the orinoco_cs requires an ESSID.
If no ESSID is set (i.e. any), which I used to do in my adhoc profile, I get
Error -5

Installed pcmcia-cs-3.2.3-3mdk and the card doesn't work with the changes made
to /etc/pcmcia/config I was able to edit the config file and get it working as

reported in Bug 1454 and after I removed the card, my system locked up:

says that the network card is locked and then my system is also locked.

Edited /etc/pcmcia/config to load orinoco_cs instead of wvlan_cs but without success,
when
inserting the card the cardmgr reported can't get dev info on socket 0.
