I just installed 9.1RC2 - bug 1366 is still there. Had to do the work-around listed
below to get
the user name and password login windows to show.

The login screen does not let me type in a user name. I wanted to test another
user's solution to my network problem (bug 894 which was to login as root and
see if the sis900 network card would work), but I cannot! Please allow me to
type the username, and provide buttons for users to click on names as well (like
9.1 beta 2 had, I believe).

I found the workaround for this: in the KDE desktop, menu: K, Configuration,
KDE, System, Login Manager, then on the Users tab, deselect the checkbox under
“Hidden Users” for user root. However, this is a lot of steps to do this,
whereas before you had the option of typing the username or clicking on the
user’s icon. Please bring this behavior back as the default.

This is Mandrake Linux 9.1 beta 3.

I just downloaded and installed 9.1 RC1.

I logged out and the login screen still had only buttons to click on user names.
There was no provision for entering a user name. Please revert the behavior of
the login screen such that the user can enter the username. Clicking on an icon
can of course be optional, but the ability to enter a username is essential.

A type-in box is an absolute requirement, in my view, as is
an option to disable display of user icons. In networked
systems with large numbers of user accounts, the iconic display
is very annoying.
