With the standard kernel the ACPI is not working on my SonyVaio PCG-FX501
laptop.
My lilo.conf contain the option "apci=on apm=off pci=biosirq".
I tried also with only the standard option "acpi=on" but with the same results.
The problems are:
The fan cooler is always on, no battery status on KDE 3.1

Thanks.

Sorry for the delay of my answer but I was out of the office from several days.
I tested the kernel kernel-source-2.4.21-0.13mdk with the suggestions of Robert
Goshko and now the system seems to work.
My opionion is that the fan cooler is not working in a very good mode (it is
very often on), so in the future it's necessary to improve the fan cooler
control algorithm.

I have a similar problem with the stock kernel on my Compaq 725CA, due to the
"loose" ACPI standards and how Compaq decided to implememt them.

The two biggest are the "Local APIC support on uniprocessors" and "Support for
PCI hotplug (EXPERIMENTAL)" config options.

The following kernel config options work for me:

# Processor type and features
* Processor family: from 'i586' to 'athlon/duron/k7'
* AMD mobile Athlon/Duron Powernow!: from 'm' to 'y'
* Local APIC support on uniprocessors: from 'y' to 'n'

# General setup
* Advanced power management BIOS support: from 'm' to 'n'

* PCI hotplug support
  o Support for PCI hotplug (EXPERIMENTAL): from 'm' to 'n'

* ACPI support
  o AC adapter: from 'm' to 'y'
  o Battery: from 'm' to 'y'
  o Button: from 'm' to 'y'
  o Fan: from 'm' to 'y'
  o Processor: from 'm' to 'y'
  o Thermal Zone: from 'm' to 'y'
  o Toshiba laptop extras: from 'm' to 'n'

I installed and tested the following new packages:
kernel-source-2.4.21-0.13mdk.i586.rpm
acpi-0.6-5mdk.i586.rpm

The problems still exist !
Fan very often ON and shutdown procedure do not power off the laptop !!!

The problems are not in the acpi package, but in the kernel itself (I'm not
compiling the kernel source with ACPI built as modules).

Whit the old kernel-2.4.19 (obtained from kernel.org) and acpi patch (obtained

Dear Sir, the problem still remain.
My starting situation is the following:
1) Laptop Sony Vaio PCG-FX501
2) Mandrake 9.1 RC1
3) lilo.conf contain the line "apci=on apm=off pci=biosirq".

This is the situation when I sent my first description of the bug 2023 on
qa.mandrakesoft.com
After this I installed the latest kernel 2.4.21pre4-10mdk compiled and
installed from scratch (all ACPI options are enabled not as external modules,
and APM has been disabled).
The situation changed from the first install of the MDK91RC1:
- now the battery status is correctly displayed on KDE31
- the cooling fan still ON for all the time (problem still to be solved)
- the shutdown command is not shuttin down the laptop power at the end of the
shutdown procedure
- the directory /proc/acpi/fan is empty (all others ACPI directories display
correct informations and ACPI status).
I suggest also to include the installation of the acpid daemon during MDK
install instead to install it manually after.
Today I checked to have the last version of acpi packages:
- acpi-0.6-2mdk
- acpid-1.0.1-3mdk
The situation remain to be solved.
