[Cooker] [Bug 5821] [kernel] kernel 2.4.22-9mdk-i686-up-4GB does not boot w/ACPI enabled

2003-11-19 Thread [manuel]

I have a Dell Inspiron 8100 and the option 'nolapic' is not solving the problem
in my case, namely my laptop hangs completely when disconnecting the AC cord and
also when closing the lid. The option 'apic=off' does not work either, nor does
using it together with 'nolapic'.
I have only been able to solve the problem by reverting to the 2.4.21 kernel
shipped with 9.1, that works fine for me so far.

Tomas: You can boot without acpi at the LILO prompt, hit ESC and type:
linux acpi=off

That should help you, but AFAIK it isn't related to this bug.

It's better to get machines blacklisted for acpi so that there is one kernel
only that supports all machines, with all features, and there is no sense
distributing another 20MB of kernel if one setting can be changed.

I'm having the same problem (freezing during boot when ACPI is enabled) on a
Toshiba Satellite 5105 installing from the PowerPack 9.2 DVD. Unfortunatly, the
nolapic option didn't work for me. I'm relatively new to kernel options, so I
may be applying incorrectly. I added nolapic to my append list in lilo.conf
and then ran lilo, but it still freezes. Are there any other options to get
this working? I think it's also causing other things to go wrong with my
machine, like the sound not working. My sound didn't work with 9.1 until I
enabled ACPI, then like magic, it was fine.

I have tried most recent kernels 2.4.22-10mdk to 2.4.22-18mdk with same problem.
Hardware Dell
C610 Laptop.  What happens is:

1) Unplugging/plugging power into laptop hangs system
2) Using any Fn+key combinations (including switching to external monitor) hangs
laptop

Recompilation of i8kutils (1.17) did not help, disabling i8k-module loading did not
help. So, I'm
getting a bit annoyed towards upgrading to 9.2 since any laptop related work
(especially
plugging/unplugging power) has got broken.

Hopefully this will somehow be fixed soon. Untill it will be I'll trie the nolapic
kernel option
which should do the trick for now.

Jari

Hi!

I'm running Debian Sid and compile the kernels myself.
I also detected problems concerning the local APIC. I had this problems
on a normal home computer with an NForce2 chipset. The local ACPI
code in the kernel seems to assign the IRQs in a wrong way which
afterwards causes system freezes. Since I disabled the local APIC
it works perfectly.

I know there is no possibility to boot mandrake (all versions) on Acer TM242fx
:(( what is the problem to make another kernel with no acpi, similar to red hat.
I am running mandrake at PC and would like to run it also on laptop.

 Similar problem is also with Acer 242FX. I see only OK, booting the
kernel. Then
 system freeze. Kernel option noacpi, nolacpi doesn't help. The same
problem has
 MDK 8.2,9.0,9.1,9.2. I have installed RedHat 9.0. It boots without
problem. The
 problem is maybe ACPI.

There is no 'nolacpi' option, the valid options are (AFAIK):
apic
noapic
nolapic
lapic
acpi=off
acpi=on
acpi=ht

You may also want to try the more recent kernels in cooker.

On a HP laptop pavilion ze4375, 2.4.22-6mdk could boot in ACPI mode without a
problem, when 2.4.22-10mdk froze early with the same message as you:

Looking for DSDT in initrd... not found.

Since 6mdk could boot, I suspected the few changes in between 6mdk and 10mdk:
local apic is faulty :(.

The HP laptop will boot in ACPI mode adding the kernel boot option: nolapic

I'm not sure this is a dupe of 5898, which has few and unclear informations.

Also occurs with stock kernel.

Get error message on startup with ACPI enabled:

looking for DSDT in initrd... not found.

Freezes at that point.
