What happens if you turn off all compositing effects?

Dear Coot community,

I encountered some problems using Coot on fedora core 10. I installed the binaries, and upon starting, the system crashed just in the moment when the Coot window appeared. I have a ATI radeon X1650 graphics card. When I switch from the standard radeon to the ATI fglrx graphics driver, the system does
not crash anymore, but Coot quits with the following error message:

The program 'coot-real' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)'.
 (Details: serial 661 error_code 1 request_code 143 minor_code 19)
 (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.) coot-exe: "/usr/local/bin/coot-Linux-i386-fedora-10-gtk2-python/bin/ coot-real"
coot-version:
/usr/local/bin/coot-Linux-i386-fedora-10-gtk2-python/bin/coot-real
platform:
/bin/uname
core: #f
No core file found. No debugging

Any hints how to solve this problem?

Best regards and thanks in advance,
David
