OK, well, obviously just writing this made me rethink a bit, and I managed to 
get client B running in the correct thread, so it receives notifications and 
immediately sees changes to the system setup. So that’s great.

I’m still intrigued to know why it wasn’t seeing anything before though, when 
it had no callback - seems like maybe the callback addition triggers something 
in the client which sets a different mode, or ignores a cache, or ... 
something? Would love to know how that works and what the rationale is, if 
anyone has any info!
