Re: [CoTyroneMailingList] Fwd: Help!

2018-07-17 Thread Mary Redline via CoTyroneList

A big thank you to those of you who are helping members find their County
Tyrone ancestors. I have been researching some on my mother's lines and one
line comes from County Tyrone. I do not have a town or parish name (the family
was Catholic) for researching further. Here is what I know from records in
Ohio.

Barbara Shakey (this would be her married name; in none of the records is a
husband mentioned, so I'm thinking she might be a widow). According to various
census records, she would have been born in Ireland ca. 1770. However, her
tombstone at Holy Trinity Cemetery, Somerset, Perry County, OH lists her dates
as 1762-1861. She was interred 24 March 1861, aged 99 years.

She was the mother of at least three children, born in Ireland.
--Hugh Sharkey, b. 4 May 1799 (was 39 years, 10 months and 11 days at the time
of his death on 15 March, 1839). His mother Barbara was listed as the executor
to his will and his tombstone includes, "A Native of County Tyrone."
--Elizabeth Sharkey. When her only daughter Barbara died 26 August 1844 in
Ohio, Barbara (the elder) was listed as her mother and Teresa Dean as her
sister.
--Teresa (Tessa) Sharkey Dean--this is my direct line. Born around 1815-1817
depending on various records; census records state that she was born in
Ireland. On 13 February 1838, she married Hugh Dean in Perry County, Ohio.

Perry County was formed in 1818, at which there was also established St.
Joseph's Church. Hence, many Catholics settled in the area as they could
practice their faith. In this church's records, Hugh Sharkey is listed as a
sponsor in 1831 and 1832, so presumably the family emigrated from Ireland
before then. There are other Sharkeys listed in the record, but I could not
establish a link with them to Barbara Sharkey: Catharine Sharkey, Margaret
Sharkey, Sara Sharkey, and William Sharkey.

I would be very appreciative of any leads to tracing this family line. Thank
you.

town land just outside Carrickmore. Roberta

My husband and I are traveling to county Tyrone in September. We are looking
for the Meenans, some of whom emigrated to Philadelphia in the 1880's.
Specifically, we are looking for Michael meenan and Margaret Morris meenan, of
carrickmore. As far as we can tell, Michael and Margaret had 6 sons. Owen,
born in 1861, emigrated to Philadelphia and died there in 1916. Michael meenan
jr., born 1865, was 30 and never married according to the 1901 census (which
we hope is the right one! ) frank (most likely Francis, was born in 1872,
emigrated to Philadelphia in 1880 and became a naturalized citizen in 1895. He
died in Philadelphia in 1930. Frank was my husband's great grandfather. There
was also John, born 1873, and Joseph, born 1875. There is no record of either
of them emigrating. We think that michael was the head of the clan. We don't
want to go to the wrong area. Please let me know what you know! Thanks, Carrie
Mahan (husband's name was changed from meenan by his f
 ather ).

I am now heartened that you found records for Patti. I have been trying to go
back beyond my great great grandfather Nathaniel Steenson (and his wife
Margaret Templeton) (and get more info on Nathaniel).

I am going to the genealogy library in San Diego today. Where do you suggest I
look? They have more resources than I do. I assume the Steenson’s came from
Scotland in the 1600s when the Ulster plantations were created.

Nathaniel is listed with two sons in Griffiths Valuation (last name listed as
Steenson). His lessor was William Carberry, Earl of Charelmont in the barony
of Middle Dungannon, parish of Clonfeacle, townland of Dunamony. He was born
“about” 1801 and died December 17, 1873. I don’t have accurate information on
his wife.

His son, William Stenson/Steenson was born in 1836 in Armagh and emigrated to
America with his wife Isabella Eakin and their children (his son George was
born in Oregon and is my paternal grandfather. He died in Iregon in 1915.

I cannot find emigration records except for a passenger list on the Utopia that
landed in New York (from Glasgow, Scotland) August 27, 1874.

Luckily, RootsIreland has the records for his local church online, so here is

James Traynor senior had a small 8 acre farm.

And that means, you can find exactly where he lived using the maps at :

Now, if you want to find out if he had family left in the area, you need to
start chasing up those Tranors using the GVRBs and then the two censuses of
1901 and 1911.

Hope this helps, Patricia.
