Extracted from the TYRONE CONSTITUTION, January 23, 1846 “DEATH BY DROWNING. On Monday last, about two o’clock, as a young man named EDWARD GAMBLE, of Woodend [Leckpatrick parish], in the neighbourhood of Strabane, was passing over the river at Clonleigh, near the residence of the Rev. Mr. KNOX, in a rudely-constructed cot, it unfortunately capsized and he was drowned. He was about eighteen years of age, and was passing to the other side of the river to endeavour to get employment on the Derry and Enniskillen railway, when he was thus launched into eternity, in view of many persons who could render no assistance. The body was found on the following day.” Gambles were long-term Abercorn tenants at Woodend: William Gamble is recorded in the 1777 rental of the Manor of Cloghogle. There were two Gamble families (ROBERT and ANDREW) in the townland at the time of Griffiths Valuation (1858).
