We are going to be rolling our own network based on Drupal. We may
be using Drupal Commons as a base, metioned earlier in this thread.
The developers have set up a demo site you can use, in an eat your
own dogfood manner, it is a site about their software and the
community that is growing around

Do you use Google products at all? I've designed an intranet before
using Google sites and it was super easy and intuitive! They have
templates for all sorts of site types, including a pretty usable
interactive website I believe!
