[Coworking] New podcast on Coworking Shared Communities (Makerspaces, Tool Libraries, etc)
Hi everyone! I'm excited to announce our new project: Share Local Radio http://sharelocalradio.com, a weekly podcast covering share projects and the share economy. I'm from Reno Colllective http://renocollective.com Coworking, which has had a home for the last 5 years in Reno, NV and we spent 2 years prior to that building the community and testing the viability of coworking in our city. My cohost, Ashley Hennefer, is the founder of the Northern Nevada Tool Library http://nntl.co which is just over a year old and also based in Reno. While we plan on touching briefly on topics like ridesharing, coops, etc. we'll be primarily focused on communities that tend to also have physical spaces, such coworking, maker/hackerspaces, urban farms and tool libraries. We have done our first two episodes setting the stage at a high level but we really want to dig into topics that coworking spaces and other shared spaces care about and encounter daily. The first two episodes give a sense of the shared communities in our area but by no means is this going to be a local show. We are looking to feature guests from spaces around the world and going through questions from new and veteran space owners, community managers and more. We'd love for you to check out the podcast, subscribe to the show and contact us through sharelocalradio.com if you want to do any of the following: - Ask a question for us to answer on the show - Provide feedback on topics we discussed in a previous show for us to discuss in a future episode - Represent your space on a future episode as a guest -- Visit this forum on the web at http://discuss.coworking.com --- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Coworking group. [Coworking] Re: New podcast on Coworking Shared Communities (Makerspaces, Tool Libraries, etc)
Thanks everyone! Loved The Coworkers podcast with Alex and Tony, it would be cool to see it come back to life. Alex and Derek, we'd love to have you both talk coworking, IndyHall, Gangplank on the show. I'll get in touch off list. Subscribed to DangerCast as well, very topical :) Happy coworking! [Coworking] Re: Swipe card system for members
I just finished wrapped up building our locks. I'm working on a post mortem post now that will detail the process, hardware needed and the code so anyone can replicate it. The total cost for our system was around $200. I'll be sure to share it here and on twitter when it's up! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqdIZYXpnfA At the top level it consists of an arduino, ethernet shield, lock and some basic components. The way I've built it currently allows me to administer the users through WordPress (which we use for our members already). Each member has an RFID code associated with their WordPress account and each time you pass a card over the reader, the arduino sends an HTTP request to the WordPress server and tries to find a match. In this case, the arduino is like a web client but the next step is to make it more into a server so that we can use other devices to open the door like an iPhone, android or even SMS/phone through Twilio. If you want a prebuilt system that allows you to open your door with a mobile phone, I'd check out Lockitron (https://lockitron.com/). They are a YC company. Happy coworking! [Coworking] Re: Chains on desks
Araceli, I would look into something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Kensington-64068E-MicroSaver-Notebook-Security/dp/B0K4KH However, they really are made for laptops with that special hole in the side. You could look at cable bike locks as well, as a chain is probably not the most aesthetically pleasing. - Colin -- Colin Loretz Reno Collective Coworking @renocollective On Feb 11, 7:29 am, Araceli Camargo-Kilpatrick thecubelon...@googlemail.com wrote: Hello, We have been asked by a potential member if can put in a system to lock down computer screens with chains.does anyone do that? [Coworking] Re: Financing, Investment
I just looked at a wonderful potential space for Reno Collective, however, everything is now coming down to a matter of financing. We absolutely fell in love with the space but it is in need of being completely built out. I spoke with the owner and he mentioned that it will cost at least $30,000-$40,000 on our end to get the place going and then we can work out a monthly rate for the lease. Holy cow! I'm working with the local development authorities and government offices to get funding for providing downtown redevelopment and keeping young professionals/business in town. Has anyone had success in getting funding from the Small Business Administration or local Small Business development centers? The cost to get this place in serviceable shape is high but I think the space would be worth it. Here is a picture of one of the corners, as you can see, it needs a lot: http://flickr.com/photos/colinloretz/2862460467/ - Colin On Aug 5, 9:10 pm, Ian Graham [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Financingfor theCodeFactory was done in a similar manner to Office Nomads. First step is to get actively involved in the local community “Bottoms Up” for fun and then realized there is a strong community and potential market for the space. Next step “Top Down” was a two step process; get a loan for physical assets and find a source of working capital for operating expenses (rent, internet, coffee, janitorial, ...). There is a great program in Canada called the Canadian Small BusinessFinancingProgram (http://www.ic.gc.ca/epic/site/csbfp-pfpec.nsf/en/home) which is a good source of money for hard assets and the government shares the risk for the loan. Next step is to find some working capital, best of luck to you in this regard. For working capital I loaned the money to the business from a personal line of credit secured with my home. If you are a new business your personal credit rating is huge and will basically form the basis for getting any sort of money from the bank. The best advice I could offer is try to avoid offering a personal guarantee if you can. So in summary get a loan for your assets; furniture, computers and other STUFF, this is fairly straight forward. Find a source of working capital which is much harder to do because this isn’t secured with anything. Do whatever you can to preserve your working capital.
