design does just what I want it to (i.e the image in the top right hand
corner sits tight in the column with no gaps either side) but in IE6 the

Mysteriously while I was working on other parts of the design this issue
resolved itself. I'm not quite experienced enough yet to figure out why

In IE7, the top of the background image (bg-white-narrow.gif) is lower by
several pixels than in FF. The FF version is the way I want it.

ok, i answered my own question.
i used this approach:
pa href=somelink.html id=somenamespanText to be
replaced/span/a/p
I then gave the a a background image, and on hover, adjusted the
background position to show the hover state. And finished by giving the
span a display:block; and
