I would check your image in an editing program like Photoshop.
Are you using PNG or GIF with transparency?
If so, I would imagine that your image has a transparent edge that is
causing the small gaps.
Or, perhaps a JPG image that is not on a full pixel so it has an
antialiased edge that looks
