In IE5.5+ I'm guessing the problem doesn't appear inside the table due to some hasLayout magic, but for FF it seems to be just a function of line-height. I boosted up the text and found the value 1.12 as ideal for the demo. Don't know what that line-height will do to other browsers, though. Depends on what their default value of "normal" is.
