All that remains now at the Branch Davidian community site where the church once stood is high grass, cactus, rubble and barbed wire. For the last six years, documentary filmmaker and radio host, Alex Jones has been at the forefront of exposing the government cover-up of its violation of the First Amendment that entails the Freedom of Religion and the free exercise thereof. With the support of surviving Branch Davidians, Jones will spearhead the building of a new, completely functional, substantial church on Mount Carmel on the site where their church was destroyed in 1993. Alex Jones has a strong relationship with all of the surviving Branch Davidians who are not incarcerated. He has interviewed them all on radio, television and for his documentaries. "First and foremost, we have to understand that these people were scattered to the four winds. Those who weren't killed or falsely imprisoned have little identity due to the fact that their cultural and religious center was destroyed. I say we set out to ressurect this structure as a monument to freedom of religious and cultural expression, and as a reminder to the dangers of the government having police powers that are too wide and undefined," says Jones. Jones is dead serious about the construction project. Earlier this year, Jones and his associates were horrified to learn that Joe Campana, a World War II and Korean War Veteran with 100 percent disability was about to have his home demolished by the City of Austin, which had condemned it as "unsafe." Racing against city bulldozers, Jones and his associates met with Joe Campana and within 13 days, a city record, had built him a new, fully furnished home thanks to a community of volunteers that joined forces and donated materials to help out the disabled veteran. The story of the rebuilding of Joe Campana's home was documented and supported by Austin CBS affiliate KEYE-42, FOX-7 and featured in the Austin-American Statesman in two articles dated Tuesday Jan 26, 1999 and Sunday February 7, 1999.
