Cops Mystified As Intern Vanishes By HELEN KENNEDY Daily News Washington Bureau WASHINGTON Police are investigating the mysterious case of a missing intern who told friends just before she vanished that she was secretly dating a politician. Chandra Levy, 24, the daughter of a top cancer doctor, disappeared April 30, the day before she was supposed to fly home to California after completing a government internship. Chandra Levy Cops found her purse - with money, cell phone, driver's license and credit cards - inside her Dupont Circle apartment. Her suitcases were neatly packed by the door, and there was no sign of a struggle. One of Levy's college pals, Michelle Yanez, told the Los Angeles Times that Levy was so secretive about the man she was seeing that "it worried us." "She couldn't say who it was. 'Couldn't,' that's how she put it," Yanez said. "She said it was 'someone in politics.'" A married congressman who was interviewed by cops issued a statement denying he had a romantic relationship with Levy. Rep. Gary Condit (D-Calif.) became friends with Levy when she visited his office to shmooze with a pal who was interning there, said Mike Dayton, Condit's spokesman. "People are making it sound suspicious, but he's the one who called the cops," Dayton said. "We are going to interview anyone who knew her," said police spokesman Sgt. Joe Gentile, who refused to elaborate. Cops in Levy's hometown of Modesto, Calif., said something was odd about the case because Washington police had told them to stop investigating. "There's obviously a lot of clues to be uncovered here in California - who she talked to, who she may have dated - but they've chosen to decline our help," said Stanislaus County sheriff's spokesman Kelly Huston. "They've basically said they don't want us to do any interviews. That's got us very perplexed," he said. Levy was described by friends as a careful person who was afraid to walk the streets alone and preferred policy to parties. She kept her romantic relationship, which began in December, a deep, dark secret, said friend Sven Jones. "She was very private about that. Always. That's something I just don't want to talk about," he said. Levy's parents, Robert and Sue Levy, extremely distraught at the lack of information, were flying into Washington last night. Chandra Levy, who worked in the press office of the Bureau of Prisons, was scheduled to receive her master's degree in journalism from the University of Southern California last Friday. She was last seen on the afternoon of Monday, April 30, canceling her membership at a nearby health club. Police reportedly found the cancellation papers in her apartment, indicating she got home. Levy's building, the Newport, about 10 blocks from the White House, has excellent security. Even residents are not allowed keys to the front door but must be buzzed in by a security guard.
