Mother urges adding gays to hate crime law
SANTA MONICA, June 1 – Judy Shepard knows nothing will bring back her son,
Matthew, who was beaten, tied to a wooden fence and left for dead on a
remote Wyoming roadside because he was gay.
She called on California lawmakers Tuesday to pass a bill that
would protect gays from similar hate crimes at school, and spare parents
from the pain she lives.
AB 222, drafted by Sheila Kuehl, D-Santa Monica, would add sexual
orientation to sections of the California Education Code that protect
students from other forms of discrimination.
The code now states that every student has the right to educational
opportunity without regard to “race, creed, color, religion, national
origin, sex or economic status.”
The bill was defeated on the Assembly floor during its 1997-98 session.
It is expected to be voted on in the Assembly sometime this week. It would
then move to the state Senate.
Shepard’s mother wrote that “it is time for parents, legislators and
community leaders to take the first steps toward protecting all of our
children, as they strive each day to learn and grow.”
The letter is addressed to a “Member of the California State Assembly.”
It was released by Kuehl.
“Whether the bullying is based on a child’s disability, race, religion
or sexual orientation, it is inexcusable.” who spit anti-gay epithets at
him, even as they beat him to death,” she wrote.
“If legislation such as AB 222 had existed in my home state of Wyoming,
perhaps these troubled young men would have learned a fundamental respect
for all people.”
