The Pentagon, in written statements Thursday, said the sale would ''not affect the basic military balance in the region.'' But Beijing responded Friday by saying the deal amounted to ''rude interference'' in internal Chinese affairs. ''The U.S., regardless of China's solemn representations, will flagrantly sell a large number of advanced weapons to Taiwan,'' said a Foreign Ministry spokesman, Sun Yuxi, in a statement issued by the official Xinhua press agency. ''The U.S. side should bear the serious consequences arising therefrom.'' The Pentagon said the 200 AIM-120C medium-range, air-to-air missiles would enhance the defensive capabilities of Taiwan's U.S.- made F-16 fighter jets. Yang Chih-heng, an expert on Taiwan's military, called the sale a breakthrough. Washington has in the past refused to approve sales of such missiles to Taiwan. ### Government control of private-sector industry used to be called fascism.
