-Caveat Lector- http://www.skynews.co.uk/skynews/world/story14.htm FLIGHT 990 WAS HIT BY A MISSILE - CLAIM EgyptAir's chief pilot has claimed the Flight 990 crash was probably caused by a bomb or a missile blowing off its tail-fin. Rejecting theories that mechanical failure or suicide was responsible for the crash off the east coast of America at the end of October, Tarek Selim, said there were only two possible reasons. Speaking before flying off to join Egyptian crash experts, he said: "There are two possibilities that would cause the tail unit to split off. Either a bomb was attatched to the tail or it was hit by a missile. No problems "I flew the Boeing 767, which is one of the best aircraft for 12-years without any major problems," he said, "any problem, and I mean any problem, apart from an explosion, can be handled and the plane will remain under control. "In all circumstances the pilot will certainly have plenty of time to talk, contact control points and act accordingly to instructions," added Mr Selim. Adding to his theory that it could have been a bomb or missle, Mr Selim then said: "In case of a serious emergency, all the pilot has to do is say 'Mayday' and the distress call will be heard by all airports. But they did not have the chance to utter this word." Tail broke off Investigators have already said that the planes right and left elevators, which make the plane ascend and descend, were pointing in different directions during its plunge. Mr Selim also vented his anger at the theories that the co-pilot on the doomed flight had committed suicide by deliberately set the plane into a dive. Leaked reports from the cockpit voice recorder led to the theory that the co-pilot may have committed suicide, although this theory was later retracted by officials. He said: "I believe the speculation fuelled by leaks of information from the cockpit recorder are ridiculous." Pilots' Association hits out This criticism has been echoed by the President of the International Federation of Airline Pilots' Association. Captain Ted Murphy, was unhappy at how quickly the suicide theory had gained credibility, saying: "It just appals me that we had all this personal imformation about the co-pilot." He added the incorrect interpretations of the cockpit voice recorder had been "deeply hurtful to the families of the crew...to EgyptAir and to all professional flight crew."
