ET Subject: Another Reason for Honest Armed Citizens and Amateur Radio Operators ~ Emergeny Communications Save a Life: A True Story: **************************************************************************** ********************* FROM: THE UPI WIRE SERVICE: THE FOLLOWING TRUE STORY: The U.S. Coast Guard says ham radio operators in Florida, Pennsylvania and other places played a major roles in getting help for a Dutch family whose teen-age son was shot and wounded by pirates off the Honduran coast last week. The harrowing adventure for the van Tuijls family began March 28. Their 44-foot sailboat was anchored with two other sailboats. Jacco van Tuijl and his 13-year-old son, Willem, were returning to their boat when they were attacked by a group of men in another boat, who opened fire on their dinghy. The boy was seriously wounded in the abdomen. Jacco van Tuijl said he pulled his bleeding son to their sailboat and used his radio to call for help. Two ham radio operators who are doctors helped the van Tuijls keep their son alive until they could rendezvous with a Honduran navy vessel, which had been contacted by the U.S. Coast Guard. The ham radio operators had called for the Coast Guard's help. Ham radio operator Ed Petzolt of Florida worked through the White House and the office of Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Texas, to get the visa clearances so the family could fly from Honduras to Dallas for treatment at Children's Medical Center's trauma center. Willem's kidneys and spinal cord were damaged by the gunshot, according to doctors. He has no feeling in his legs but doctors are hopeful he'll be able to walk again, a hospital spokesman said. The van Tuijl family had been cruising around the world since 1995 aboard their sailboat. -- Copyright 2000 by United Press International.
