New unofficial tallies from Florida show Al Gore gaining 682 votes from
the so-called "overvotes," ballots kicked out because counting machines
detected more than one vote for president. The gain -- discovered in the
Miami Herald/USA Today analysis -- would be enough to erase George W.
Bush's official victory margin of 537 votes.

But like everything else in Florida's election, it's not quite that
simple. What is clearer is that Al Gore was the choice of the voters, both
in Florida and the United States. Bush, however, enjoyed a decisive
advantage with the national news media, demanding "closure" in the days
after the election, and with conservative operatives dispatched to Florida
to stage unruly and even violent protests.
