Belgian Royalty Almost Attacked BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) - A former Spanish priest who served jail time for lunging at Pope John Paul II with a rusty bayonet vaulted over security fences and rushed at the Belgian royal couple on Tuesday. He was overpowered by police. Juan Fernandez-Krohn ran toward the red carpet in front of the Royal Palace, where King Albert II and Queen Paola were awaiting the arrival of King Juan Carlos of Spain, who was making a state visit. Fernandez-Krohn, who is familiar to local journalists, was grabbed by police and secret service agents some 40 yards from the royals. Fernandez-Krohn received a seven-year sentence for his attempted attack on the pope during John Paul's visit to the shrine of Fatima, Portugal, in 1982. Fernandez-Krohn was freed early and moved to Belgium, where he has been in trouble with authorities for distributing anti-Semitic tracts and fighting with neighbors. Witnesses said he did not appear to be armed when he was detained Tuesday. He was shouting in Spanish as he ran, but it was not immediately clear what he was saying.
