-Caveat Lector- http://www.vny.com/cf/News/upidetail.cfm?QID=123678 Iraqi delegation in Belgrade Sunday, 1 October 2000 1:51 (ET) Iraqi delegation in Belgrade LONDON, Sept. 30 (UPI) - As a beleaguered Slobodan Milosevic ponders his next move to thwart calls that he step down, a delegation of Iraqi officials is in Belgrade composed of what The Telegraph Sunday said are Saddam Hussein's senior intelligence officials. They will advise the Serbian leader how to survive, the newspaper said, as Milosevic comes under strong pressure from his wife to flee. The delegation is composed of Iraq's minister of the interior and the deputy head of Iraqi intelligence, along with two senior members of the Ba'ath party and one from the so-called Olympic Committee, the organization run by Saddam's son Uday to look after his father's security and propaganda, the newspaper said. The report said Milosevic's wife Mira wants to avoid the fate of Romania's Nicolae and Elena Ceausesu, machined gunned to death after their 1989 overthrow, but Milosevic himself is determined to remain in power. The newspaper said the Iraqi delegation traveled unnoticed into Serbia last week and could help Milosevic flee through Nato troops, who are under orders to seize the Serbian leader. Milosevic Monday will meet a delegation from Russia, presumed to be preparing the way for a visit from Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov. Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Clinton Saturday spent 35 minutes on the telephone discussing Milosevic. U.S. officials afterward said they were discussing a peaceful resolution of the situation in Belgrade. The Itar-Tass news service reported Saturday that a Russian foreign ministry envoy already in Yugoslavia, Vladimir Chizhov, denied remarks attributed to him in a conversation with Montenegro's foreign minister, to the effect that Milosevic had been warned not to use force to impose his will on voters. Milosevic' administration has said a runoff election next weekend will decide whether he stays or goes and that claims the voters already decided the matter with a sufficient margin is false. -- Copyright 2000 by United Press International.
