-Caveat Lector- All: I know, I know, it must seem paranoid to ask such a question, but the following certainly provides food for thought: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Y2K BELIEVERS E-MAIL LIST As of today, we're scrapping the "believers" list for three reasons: Reason #1: Many people who signed up on the list expressed their concern that the list might be confiscated by authorities someday and be used to track down people who are preparing for Y2K (stockpiling food, ammo, etc.). In order to avoid this scenario completely, we're encrypting the database on January 11, 1999, using a 1024-bit encryption routine that's unbreakable without military-class computers. This will render the list "inactive" but will still allow us to contact you if some emergency arises. (We would simply decrypt the database, re-send, then encrypt the database again). This would mean that even if our computers were somehow confiscated, they could not access your e-mail address without the encryption phrase that only Mike Goodin knows. Reason #2: The list was originally created to provide a forum for discussing ideas such as martial law, deployment of the National Guard, potential bank failure scenarios, and so on. As it turns out, Y2K has quickly moved into the mainstream, and the idea of preparing is no longer considered loony. With the Red Cross and FEMA publicly encouraging people to prepare, and with the announcements of National Guard troop deployments now being made public, we can talk about these issues on the main list without worrying about scaring the pants off the other subscribers. BOTTOM LINE: In 1998, it wasn't "mainstream" to talk about preparedness. In 1999, it's not only mainstream, it's only the complete idiots that are still sitting around doing nothing. Reason #3: The list has been infiltrated by many people who are *not* "believers" in the Y2K preparedness movement in an effort to find "radical-sounding" text so they could try to make us sound silly in the press. Their favorite target was firearms discussions. However, if these people have any brains, they are probably right now following the very advice they were criticizing us for sharing! By ending the "believers" list, we take these infiltrators (and everybody else) out of the loop. In any case, we will continue to cover the hot topics like firearms in the public alert. As of 1999, an open discussion of "Which gun should I buy?" is no longer considered paranoid. It's a common sense question from law-abiding citizens who want to know how they can protect their families, friends and neighborhoods from criminals. THANK YOU FOR TUNING IN! We thank you for signing up on the list and hope you enjoyed the few "believers" alerts we sent out. We'll still be bringing you hard-hitting news and analysis in the public alerts.
