Founded in 1946 as the Russian Institute, it established a separate sister Institute to study E ast Central Europe in 1954. In 1982, the Institute's name was changed in gratitude for the generous endowment from Governor W. Averell Harriman and his wife, the late Honorable Pamela C. Harriman. Governor W. In 1992, following the collapse of the USSR, the Institute officially expanded its focus to encompass all the states of the former Soviet empire and was renamed the Harriman Institute. In 1997, the Harriman Institutes and the East Central European Center (ECEC) reunited to promote comparative scholarly knowledge and public understanding of the complex and changing polities, economies, societies, and cultures of the area between Germany and the Pacific Ocean. The institute is governed by an Executive Committee consisting of the Institute's senior faculty, Director and Associate Directors. Its functions and programs are supervised by a series of faculty committees and receives guidance from its National Advisory Council..
