Native Americans believed in evil forces that resides far away, in some mystical place. Anglicans and Catholics fought demons in the outer fringes of towns. But for Puritans evil was always in the hearts of their towns... It wasn't far away and mystical... It was here and deadly. When each of us were brought forth into the world our parents were all told almost the same thing... We have conquered Nature... We can now live without fear All can be reasoned and all can be explained away. And then our mothers while nursing us turned on TV Learning with a certain amount of horror of a new disease called Grid. In time it broke the boundaries of the homosexual community and crossed over into collective society. It spread like fire, and in time acquired a new name... AIDS. The victims fell fast and furious. The disease was mysterious. And the explanation of it was tedious and complicated. Few sitting at home believed the flow charts that traced back the existence of this new unseen killer to some monkey in West Africa. Like our Puritan ancestors, we could not believe in the far off mystical evil born in Africa...
