WHO'S BEHIND BUSH SMEAR STORY?

PRESIDENTIAL hopeful George W. Bush is the target of a seedy
little smear campaign.

The National Enquirer reports that a 35-year-old ex-stripper and
former Playboy model is peddling a story that she had an 18-month
affair with the Republican Texas governor that ended last June.
The supermarket weekly flatly calls Phillips' story "false" and
says it "raises the question of who put her up to trying to
destroy the Bush campaign."

Tammy Phillips claimed she was introduced to Bush by her uncle,
an influential Atlanta lobbyist, at a December 1997 political
function at a Midland, Tex., hotel.

"I was wearing a tiny miniskirt," Phillips told the Enquirer,
"and it was instant combustion." But her uncle, who wishes to
remain anonymous, has documents proving he was nowhere near
Midland on the night in question.

Phillips still insisted that she and Bush had a total of eight
liaisons ending with a June 1998 tryst in San Diego. She claimed
to have a love note from Bush, but steadfastly refused to produce
it.

So, could Phillips have been put up to the story by political
dirty tricksters? The Al Gore camp tells PAGE SIX they had
nothing to do with it:

"It's absolutely ridiculous," says Gore 2000 spokesman Peter
Ragone. "No one in our campaign has ever even heard about this."

Radio talk show host and convicted Watergate schemer G. Gordon
Liddy told the Enquirer that Bush's own words have made him
vulnerable to scandal-mongers. "Gov. Bush has made statements
like ‘I was young and foolish' that give credibility to a story
of sexual promiscuity," said Liddy.

Ari Fleischer, spokesman for the Bush campaign, tells us he's
"not interested in where it came from. It's an unfortunate part
of the nonsense of politics that demeans our system and debases
any institution it touches."

But PAGE SIX has learned that crusading pornographer Larry Flynt
-- who during Monicagate offered $1 million to anyone who could
prove they'd had an illicit affair with a Republican congressman
or senator -- is taking the matter seriously.

"We are looking into these allegations," says Flynt. "But it's
part of an on-going investigation that encompasses more than just
the stripper."
