PETA's Formal
Complaint
What You Can
Do

Last year, following an undercover investigation by PETA of Belcross Farm, a
pig-breeding factory farm in North Carolina, Camden County Superior Court
made history by handing down the first-ever felony indictments for animal
cruelty by farm workers, and on May 15, 2000, the courts convicted and
sentenced two of the men. One of the workers, Raymond Sanchez, was
indicted on two felony counts and received a $500 fine plus $960 in court
costs, 140 days in jail (with an additional 120 days suspended), and three
years
supervised probation. The nearly five-month sentence for Sanchez represents
the strongest penalty levied against an individual for cruelty towards
animals
raised for food in U.S. history and sends a strong message to potential
abusers
across the country. Russell Crawford, who was a manager at the farm,
received
a $300 fine plus court costs, a 45-day suspended sentence, and two years of
unsupervised probation. A third worker, Kelly Brown, awaits trial in July.

A PETA investigator spent three months working incognito at the farm and
took
hours of video footage that revealed shocking, systematic cruelty to
animals,
from daily violent beatings and bludgeonings of pregnant sows with a wrench
and an iron pole to workers sawing off a conscious animal's legs and
skinning
pigs alive.

On February 10, 1999, PETA filed a formal complaint with North Carolina law
enforcement authorities, which included testimony from veterinary and
livestock
experts. Babe star James Cromwell narrated PETA’s video about Belcross Farm.
The video aired numerous times after news of the May 15th convictions.

Please send a letter of thanks to the district attorney for taking the
matter
seriously and ensuring that these atrocities did not go unpunished. Write
