Who is killing off the Saudi princes?

Is somebody killing royal members of the House of Saud?  Three royal princes have died over the last eight days.

Prince Ahmed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, the owner of Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner War Emblem, died of a heart attack on July 22.  The following day his cousin was killed while traveling to Prince Ahmed’s funeral.

Prince Sultan bin Faisal bin Turki bin Abdullah, a wealthy 41-year-old Saudi businessman, was killed near Riyadh, according to an official statement from the Saudi royal family. The accident happened before dawn as Sultan was driving to the funeral.

Joint funeral prayers were held for both princes at the Imam Turki bin Abdullah mosque, the largest Islamic mosque in Saudi Arabia.  The princes were buried side by side at a cemetery in the Saudi capital.

Sultan’s mother and Ahmed’s father are daughter and son, respectively, of King Fahd.

Sultan, an ex-military pilot, died at King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Riyadh – the same hospital where his cousin died a day earlier.

The third death in the royal family happened Tuesday when Prince Fahd bin Turki bin Saud al-Kabir was found dead in the country’s searing desert.  The 25-year-old prince died of thirst and heat in the 117-degree heat.

Two other people died along side of the prince.  “They were on a trip with three other friends when their car broke down,” said the statement by the deputy director of a local Saudi police department.  “They left their friends behind to get aid, but their friends made it home safely while the other men lost their way in the desert and died.”  The prince’s body was found in the desert approximately 200 miles east of Riyadh.

Speculation has been rampant in recent weeks that there is a power struggle taking place inside the House of Saud.  London’s Guardian newspaper reported last Sunday that Saudi Arabia is “teetering on the brink of collapse, fuelling Foreign Office fears of an extremist takeover of one of the West’s key allies in the war on terror.

Large-scale demonstrations have swept across the country in recent months in protest of Prince Abdullah’s pro-American position in the war on terrorism.

The London newspaper reported that officials in Tony Blair’s government fear a palace coup from within the royal family sympathetic to the al-Qaeda.  The Guardian said the Pentagon recently sponsored a secret meeting to consider various options in the event the Saudi royal family is overthrown.
