More Steal These Facts!

Just in case you think the society you live in is sane… read on.

But first, here's a fact not in Bob Harris's "Steal This Book and Get Life
Without Parole": The new execution date for Mumia Abu-Jamal, December 2,
is the 140th anniversary of the execution of John Brown in 1859 (see email
26).

1. A new way to kill time--or at least torture it. There is now a paging
service in Los Angeles that will, for a nominal fee, page you every time a
televised police chase is occurring.

2. Turn-of-the-century-news-priorities department. At the close of this
century, Princess Diana's death in a car crash received more press
coverage--25% more--than any single event that happened during World War
II, including the Nazi invasion of France, the disaster at Dunkirk, the
bombing of London, the invasion of Normandy on D-Day, or the final
surrender of Nazi forces.

3. The immigrant labor crisis. The United States rejects immigrants from
Cuba--except those who can play ball. Consider Orlando Hernandez, older
brother of Florida Marlins' pitcher Livan Hernandez, who is allegedly a
better pitcher than his brother Livan, was accepted into the United States
while several of his boat party were turned back to the Caribbean isle by
U.S. immigration agents.

4. I-feel-your-pain department. Out of some 42,000 instances of human
rights abuses and violations in Guatemala recently investigated by the
United Nations' Independent Historical Clarification Commission, some 93%
of them were carried out by government paramilitary forces--tacitly
supported by the United States government through training, money, and
other types of aid. On a recent trip to Guatemala, President Clinton
responded to the findings by remarking that, "United States . . . support
for military forces or intelligence units which engaged in violent and
widespread repression . . . was wrong."

5. What your government gives to you. In 1998, the public helped pay for
the construction of two centers vital to the survival of the republic: the
"Paul Simon Public Policy Institute" in Carbondale, Illinois and the
"Robert J. Dole Institute for Public Service" in Lawrence, Kansas.

6. Show me the money. The paper losses that Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates
suffered on October 1997's Black Monday were enough to install a basic
computer lab in every high school in the entire United States.

This Book and Get Life Without Parole: Incendiary Insights by
Investigative Humorist Bob Harris," a man who has been called a cross
between Lenny Bruce and Noam Chomsky. Click on

NEXT WEEK: Edward S. Herman, Noam Chomsky and Robert W. McChesney on the
Political Economy of the Internet.
MONDAY: What's not so new about the “new” media.

This is the free Political Literacy Course from Common Courage Press: A
backbone of facts to stand up to spineless power. Email 29, October 15
