Now that I'm up and running again, I can finally get something off my chest
that's been bugging me about the Colorado school shootings.
I work second shift hours, which means I only get to see the news during my
break in the evening. Last week, I first learned of the school massacre when
I watched Fox News at 10 PM last Tuesday evening. What I saw was one of the
most disgusting TV moments I'd experienced in years.
It wasn't the shooting of kids by kids that disgusted me - hell, things like
that happen every other week, these days. What disgusted me was the way the
whole story was presented on the news. IT WAS AS IF I WAS WATCHING MTV!
I guess the TV broadcast assumed that I'd already heard the story earlier that
evening, and so all they had to do was show "highlights" of the affair. So
Fox News had gotten their editing crew together and put a snazzy, snappy
three-minute montage of the story, complete with a MUSICAL SOUNDTRACK! That's
right, folks -- real life just isn't DRAMATIC enough to show on prime-time
evening news anymore! No, they have to present it to us as if we were
watching just another TV show, and they pulled out all the stops and used all
the tricks at their command. Snap editing. Freeze-frames. A voice-over of
President Clinton expressing his sorrow while we watch students running in
fear from the school. And that goddamn ambient musical score, complete with a
few guitar chords at the end, reminiscent of Eric Clapton. And then, of
course, the commercial break.
I just couldn't believe what I was watching. Fox News had taken a tragic,
sorrowful disaster and turned it into a TV MOVIE! Fifteen people were dead,
and they were making sure it got GREAT RATINGS! I had to get up and leave the
room -- something I hadn't done since the time I watched an episode of "Rescue
911" and saw something *almost* as distasteful. (I'll talk about that one
later.)
All I could think about was a quote from the first (and best) "Robocop" movie:
"This is Media Break - you give us three minutes and we'll give you the
world!" I love the first Robocop movie because it's a terrific satire...but
yet again, satire pales in the face of REAL LIFE.
Of course, we'e been watching this style of TV for years. The Gulf War was
designed especially for it. We're so numbed by it that we don't even realize
how much of a hold it has on us. But every so often, a moment like this
breaks through and wakes me up to the fact that there really IS a Conspiracy,
and the Conspiracy really DOES control the world.
It's a Conspiracy of MORONS -- and they're the ones in charge.
Now excuse me, I'm going to watch "America's Goriest Police Shootouts 6."
