-Caveat Lector- Dear Mayor Schell: I attended a meeting here in my small town of Asheville, NC, last night which was attended by slightly over 200 persons- all gathered to hear from a half dozen of our neighbors who had made the long journey to your fair city of Seattle, for the purpose of a determined non-violent exercise of their First Amendment protected rights as Citizens of the several united States. The stories of our neighbors, several of whom experienced the very dubious hospitality of your Jail- were corroborations of what we've seen on the Internet, and in some of the excellent quality independent news coverage by video dispersed on the Internet and via live satellite feed. The video we saw clearly showed peaceful non-violent Citizens attacked physically and chemically by your Police. Quite brutally in some instances which included children and elderly women. The only loss of life that I'm aware of was a woman's suffering of a miscarriage due to Police violence. The depiction on the video was corroborated by our neighbors who attended the WTO Protest. This is illegal, Mr. Mayor. Please "do the right thing" in retrospect. You have an opportunity here, to make a stand of solidarity with transnational corporations- or to Honor your Commitment to The PEOPLE. Don't take it too lightly- this may be the most important choice of your life. If you choose the course of Honor, your place in history and politics may be quite interesting! As it is, the recent events in your fair city have ignited a powerful coalition of solidarity in The PEOPLE which has not been seen since the Civil Rights movement of the Vietnam tragedy. Listen well to history being made, and to the place you would choose for yourself and your city. A good portion of the 50,000 plus peaceful demonstrators are now similarly making their reports back to their communities and neighbors. The event of the WTO in Seattle - momentous as it may have been- is the stone dropped in the lake. The ripples are spreading throughout the country, and as you've seen- the People will not be denied. We stand in support of those who were jailed, many of whom were illegally attacked while peacefully assembled. I wish you strength of conscience in making your choice. I hope many of my friends and associates join me in this wish.
