This point was covered by me and others on two Fox-TV live
segments out of Dallas yesterday. All the facts aren't in, of
course, and probably won't ever be, but it seems clear to me that
the "best guess" right now is disorientation, followed by an over
correction (or a correction applied backwards) that caused a loss
of control resulting in a high speed spin into the water at a
near vertical angle at something around 300 knots.
I also hit the judgment issue pretty hard --
A Single Engine Land Private Pilot with no IFR rating, only
around 200 hours of total flight time, with experience flying the
aircraft type in question limited to three months, takes off on
an night flight over water, flying into deteriorating destination
weather. This is nothing but a major failure in judgment.
I said on Fox-TV yesterday (local Dallas Station) that if I had
been at the Essex County Airport in Fairfield, New Jersey, and
was a non-pilot who needed a quick ride to Martha's Vineyard, and
had been offered a lift by JFK, Jr., on Friday night (and knew
what he knew about his training and experience) I would not have
taken him up on his offer to fly me to Martha's Vineyard unless
"it were a matter of life and death" (a little intended irony
there which I think went right by my anchorman).
