(AP) - Supervisors at a central New Jersey testing lab admitted Friday that they doctored data for a Japanese fuel blender so millions of gallons of gasoline designed to reduce air pollution would appear to meet federal standards. As a result, substandard reformulated gasoline was sold for 2 1/2 years to motorists in Connecticut, New Jersey and New York, according to the three men, who each pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court. The three men, supervisors at Caleb Brett's lab in Linden, said they falsified the data on behalf of Itochu Corp., The Japanese company shipped gasoline to Linden for distribution to retailers, but could not unload unless it met specifications. ``It was understood that if we didn't do it, Itochu would take their business elsewhere,'' said former supervisor Ronald J. Domnik, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency had no assessment yet of how much extra pollution the gasoline caused, spokesman Rich Cahill said. A lawyer for Itochu, Lanny Breuer, refused to discuss Itochu's alleged role, but said officials will cooperate with the Justice Department. Domnik and Julius Balogh, who also pleaded guilty to conspiracy, each face five years in prison and $250,000 in fines. Nicholas Lehman pleaded guilty to not telling authorities about the conspiracy and faces three years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
