-Caveat Lector- Feds raid Bank of New York in money laundering probe Copyright © 1999 Nando Media Copyright © 1999 Associated Press NEW YORK (August 21, 1999 6:46 p.m. EDT http://www.nandotimes.com) - Federal investigators reportedly raided the Wall Street office of the Bank of New York in a probe of a major international money-laundering scheme that authorities say involves the Russian mob. During Friday's raid, investigators seized the files of Natasha Gurfinkel Kagalovsky, a senior vice president who supervised the bank's East European division, a source close to the bank told The New York Times in Saturday's editions. She and a bank vice president in London, Lucy Edwards, were suspended on Wednesday. Both women are married to Russian businessmen. British authorities also searched Edwards' home and office. Her husband, Peter Berlin, had authority over some accounts at the bank. Neither she nor her husband has been accused of any wrongdoing. However, investigators told the Times that the couple may be involved in one of the largest money-laundering operations ever conducted in the United States. As much as $10 billion allegedly was laundered through the bank in what investigators say is an operation run by Russian organized crime, the Times reported. Some $4.2 billion passed through a single account in more than 10,000 transactions between October and March, the newspaper said, citing unidentified investigators. The Bank of New York Co. is the nation's 15th largest. In a statement, the bank said it "has been cooperating with the office of the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York in the confidential investigation of the use of bank facilities to transfer funds from Russia to other countries." No funds were lost and there were no allegations of wrongdoing by the bank, according to the statement.
