Ford Plant in Brazil Still Struck

By The Associated Press
SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) -- Union leaders on Friday vowed to stay out on
strike at the Ford truck plant in Sao Paulo, saying the company's promise
to guarantee workers their jobs until year-end was insufficient.

Nearly 1,500 workers went on strike Thursday after a newspaper reported
that the Ford would shut down its Sao Paulo factory and transfer
production to the northeastern state of Bahia.

The strike brought the facility in a working-class neighborhood of Sao
Paulo to a standstill. It normally produces 120 trucks a day.

Ford denied it was planning to move the plant to Bahia but acknowledged
it was studying the possibility of transferring it to a less densely
populated area in Sao Paulo state.

After a meeting with Ford's human resources director, Carlos Augusto
Marino, labor leaders said Thursday that an agreement was reached to
guarantee jobs for the workers through Dec. 31. That was expected to get
the workers' back on their jobs.

Eleno Bezerra, secretary general of the Sao Paulo Metalworkers Union,
said Ford also promised to keep the truck factory in Sao Paulo state and
would give the union a say as to where it will be moved.

But on Friday, Carlos Abreu Ortiz, director of the Sao Paulo metal
workers union, said the strike would continue until Ford promised to move
the workers along with the plant.

Ortiz said the union planned to stage protests to call attention to the
workers' plight.
