WALTHAM, Mass. - Lycos Inc., the popular Web destination, said
it will not renew an advertisement from Jews for Jesus because of
complaints from some in the Jewish community.
Lycos Inc. said it received complaints about the ad from several
Jewish people who took offense when the ad popped up on their
screens as they searched for Web sites containing the word
``Jewish.''
Jews for Jesus paid $1,700 for the ad, which started running July 6.
The ad, which promotes a book on the group's religious philosophy,
read: ``The end of the world is no time to finally realize Jesus is the
Messiah. (It's all in the book.) Click here for a free copy!''
When users clicked, a Web page for Jews for Jesus appeared.
The page originally also referenced Lycos, but was changed after
complaints were received and at Lycos' prompting. Jeffrey Snider,
Lycos' general counsel, said the company did not want to give
users the impression it endorsed Jews for Jesus.
Started in the 1970s, Jews for Jesus practices Judaism, yet
regards Jesus as the Messiah. It has 70,000 followers nationally.
Snider told The Boston Globe that the ad's contract, which expires
in several days, was not renewed because ``controversial
advertising is bad for business.''
He added the company does not want Jews to boycott Lycos.
The ad was opposed by the Anti-Defamation League's Boston
office. Diane Kolb, associate director, said she believes the
message is misleading and blasphemous.
``Jews can't be for Jesus,'' she said.
Lycos officials did not say how many complaints they had received.
Jews for Jesus officials said they were disappointed their message
was restricted.
``The Web is supposed to be a marketplace for all kinds of ideas,
and people can click on them or pass them by,'' said Susan
Perlman, spokeswoman for Jews for Jesus.
