Mr Clinton was brought up to believe he was sired by Bill Blythe, an accused bigamist killed in a car accident two months before the President was born. But David Maraniss, Mr Clinton's biographer, learnt of whispers about his parentage because, nine months earlier, Blythe had still been in the Army in Italy. The author was contacted by the family of a man who appeared to have had an affair with Virginia, President Clinton's mother, at the time of his conception. She dismissed the gossip by saying that Bill was born prematurely after she had suffered a fall. But when Vanity Fair tracked down the midwife, she denied he was born prematurely.
