Korea joint exercise Associated Press SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea lambasted a planned U.S.-South Korea joint military exercise Thursday, saying it might heighten tensions on the divided Korean Peninsula. “The U.S. imperialist aggressors are clinging to a dangerous adventure which may escalate tensions on the Korean Peninsula and push the situation to that on the eve of a war,” said the communist North’s official foreign news outlet, KCNA, monitored in Seoul. The United States and South Korea plan to begin their weeklong “Reception, Staging, Onward Movement and Integration” exercise on April 20. The exercise, an annual event since 1994, is largely a computer-simulated war game involving about 10,000 South Korean and U.S. troops, the U.S. military command in Seoul said. South Korea and the United States characterize their military exercises as defensive but North Korea denounces them as a rehearsal for invasion. About 37,000 U.S. troops are stationed in South Korea. The United States fought on South Korea’s side during the 1950-53 Korean War, which ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty.
