6 NABBED BY YEMEN IN PLOT TO BOMB COLE

Authorities in Yemen investigating the suicide bombing of the USS
Cole have arrested six men believed to be key accomplices -
including one described as a main plotter - sources close to the
investigation said.
Scores of people have been rounded up by Yemeni authorities since
the Oct. 12 terror attack, which killed 17 American sailors -
but the six men now under arrest are the first described as
central players.
The sources told The Associated Press that no charges will be
filed in the sensitive case until the investigation is complete.
Yemeni Interior Minister Mohammed Hussein Arab said last week
that charges would soon be referred to the judiciary.
The sources said the man identified as a main plotter was in
charge of the operation in Yemen and coordinated the different
cells involved in the attack.
He told Yemeni investigators he received his orders from a man in
the United Arab Emirates described as an Arab veteran of the
U.S.-backed guerrilla war to drive Soviet forces from
Afghanistan.
The Washington Post reported last week that the two men who
carried out the suicide attack - sailing a small boat packed with
explosives up to the Cole in the port of Aden - have been
identified as Yemeni veterans of the Afghan war.
But the AP reported the main plotter said one of the bombers may
have been from Saudi Arabia.
The main plotter reportedly told investigators he never met the
two suicide bombers, but communicated with them through a third
party.
The plotters reportedly worked in cells of two or three people,
and many did not know each other.
That kind of cell structure has been used by Osama bin Laden -
the man some American officials suspect is behind the Cole
attack.
The Yemeni sources said the man identified as a main plotter was
from Aden and three other key suspects were from Lahej, a Muslim
fundamentalist stronghold 20 miles north of Aden. The two other
key suspects were described simply as Yemeni citizens.
The sources have said government officials in Lahej provided the
suspected bombers with government cars.
