Augusto Pinochet disappeared in Uruguay a few years back. The witness had been one of Pinochet's technical experts on assassinations, a scientist who had developed the nerve gas, Sarin, for Pinochet's intelligence arm, DINA. The scientist "disappeared" after being sought for a human-rights trial in Chile. He reappeared briefly in Uruguay at a police station as he begged for protection and claimed that he was to be executed on Pinochet's order. Armed men then arrived and took the scientist away. Years later, authorities found what they believe to be the scientist's remains.
