Vatican's Holocaust Archives Probed

NEW YORK (AP) _ An international team of Catholic and Jewish
scholars on Tuesday called for full access to the Vatican archives
to help establish the role of Pope Pius XII during the Holocaust.
At least one scholar questioned whether Vatican officials will
allow the team to see sensitive archival materials.
Some historians say Pope Pius XII could have done more to save
European Jews from the Nazis. A recent book by John Cornwell,
``Hitler's Pope: The Secret History of Pius XII,'' charges that the
pope ignored the plight of the Jews because he was anti-Semitic _ a
claim the Vatican strongly denies.
The International Catholic-Jewish Historical Commission was
appointed in October to examine the issue by the Vatican and an
international group of Jewish leaders. The commission met for the
first time on Tuesday.
The scholars' mandate is to study 11 volumes of World War II-era
material the Vatican published between 1965 and 1981, and to raise
questions about any missing information.
Commission member Bernard Suchecky, a researcher at the Free
University of Brussels, said that filling in the gaps requires both
access to the Vatican archives and a lesson in how they are
organized.
The Rev. Gerald Fogarty of the University of Virginia's
religious studies department said: ``We should look back and at
least acknowledge what we have done wrong. One of the greatest
obstacles to Christianity in our time is, unfortunately,
Christians.''
The other Catholic scholars on the commission are Eva Fleischner
of Montclair State University in New Jersey and the Rev. F. John
Morley of Seton Hall University in New Jersey. The Jewish
representatives are Suchecky, Robert S. Wistrich of Hebrew
University of Jerusalem and Michael R. Marrus of the University of
Toronto.
