from L. Moss Sharman Quebec City mayor lashes 'lynch mob' Whispering after juvenile sex-ring bust. Insinuations about next public figure to be charged get under L'Allier's skin Allison Hanes ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) The Gazette 2/1/03 "Something is rotten in Quebec City, and it's not just the charges of pimping and soliciting sex from minors that have been laid against 20 local men after police cracked a juvenile prostitution ring in December....News coverage of the prostitution ring has been unrelenting since the story broke in December, with photographers hounding men accused of being johns at their court appearances. Police say 20 schoolgirls from good homes have now come forward alleging they were lured into prostitution by street gang members and forced to perform unspeakable sex acts with local businessmen, including a former winter carnival president and a pharmacy chain owner." http://www.canada.com/

Second grand jury scrutinizes Phoenix diocese  Legal maneuvering delays priest sex abuse inquiry By Joseph A. Reaves and Kelly Ettenborough 1/31/03 "An eight-month criminal investigation of sexual misconduct in the Phoenix Catholic Diocese has been delayed by legal maneuvering and an unexpected shortage of grand jurors, according to newly released court records obtained by The Arizona Republic....In motions filed earlier this month with the Arizona Court of Appeals, prosecutors accuse church attorneys of engaging in "novel, obstructionist and frivolous" legal maneuvers designed to "seriously impede the grand jury's ability" to pursue an investigation. Attorneys for the diocese argue that any delays in the grand jury process are a result of attempts to ensure secrecy of documents they say should be protected."http://www.arizonarepublic.com/arizona/articles/0131priest31.html

MOVIES Documentary lacks `Power' of its subject
by Paul Sherman  Friday, January 31, 2003
``Power and Terror: Noam Chomsky in Our Times.'' Not rated.
...Although some views Chomsky espouses during ``Power and Terror'' are frustratingly vague, such as when he says the biggest obstacle to peace in the Middle East has been U.S. policy, it's difficult to refute his take on Sept. 11, 2001.Chomsky rails against the double standard he saw in much of the reaction to Sept. 11: Yes, the terrorist attacks were atrocious and inexcusable, but hasn't the U.S. government inflicted similar actions on other countries?Perhaps his most stinging words come when he tells his fellow Americans how we can stop terrorism: ``Stop participating in it.'' He cites our government's sponsorship of violent regimes in Israel and Turkey, and our support of dictators such as Saddam Hussein when it suits our purpose.
