 Terrorists Attack U.S.

DUBAI (Reuters) - King Fahd pledged Monday that Saudi Arabia would
stand by the United States in its fight against terrorism and said he
wanted to disassociate the kingdom from Saudi-born terror suspect
Osama bin Laden (news - web sites).

``The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques (King Fahd) reiterated that
the kingdom of Saudi Arabia will stand by the U.S. and support it and
cooperate with it in combating terrorism wherever it is and fight it
in all its forms,'' the state-run Saudi Press Agency said.

The remarks were the most explicit the monarch has made about Saudi
support for America in hunting down those behind last week's terror
attacks in New York and Washington.

Friday, King Fahd denounced the suicide attacks, saying the oil-rich
kingdom backed international efforts to fight terrorism.

Crown Prince Abdullah has urged Washington to avoid rushing to
conclusions about who was behind the attacks and warned against
blaming Arabs and Muslims in general.

``The kingdom rejects being associated with any person whose name is
linked to terrorism,'' the agency quoted the monarch as saying after
the weekly cabinet session Monday.

Saudi Arabia, a staunch supporter of the United States, stripped bin
Laden of his Saudi nationality in 1994 for his activities against the
royal family.

``No sane person who believes in God and Islam would commit such
acts,'' King Fahd said. He did not say what support the regional
heavyweight would give the United States, which is building an
alliance against the attackers and those who harbored them.

POLITICAL, NOT MILITARY, SUPPORT

Saudi Arabia acted as a springboard for the U.S.-led coalition that
evicted Iraq from Kuwait in 1991 after a seven-month-old occupation.

Gulf Arab sources said Saudi Arabia and its five allies in the Gulf
Cooperation Council (GCC) would avoid being sucked into a military
confrontation and instead give Washington political support and share
intelligence on militant Muslims.

A Gulf source said earlier Monday that the Saudi foreign minister,
Prince Saud al-Faisal would visit Washington this week to offer
condolences and open detailed talks on efforts to counter terrorism.

The prince will be accompanied by senior interior ministry officials,
the source said.

``Consultations are already taking place (between Washington and
Riyadh), but specifics have not been reached,'' he added.

A Saudi newspaper has quoted Prince Saud as saying U.S. authorities
had told him that some Saudi nationals had been detained for
questioning about the attacks.

Analysts say the kingdom can play a crucial role in the U.S.
investigation by providing intelligence information about bin Laden,
Washington's prime suspect, and the Taliban movement that has given
him refuge in Afghanistan (news - web sites).

Thousands of Saudis including about 6,000 students live in the United
States. An estimated 30,000 Americans reside in Saudi Arabia, the
world's leading oil exporter and the biggest supplier of crude oil to
the United States.
