U.S. Downs Low-Flying Cruise Missile in Test

An upgraded version of the Patriot missile, which proved so
effective against
Scud missiles fired by Iraq during the Gulf War, scored a direct
hit when it
downed a cruise missile in New Mexico Saturday.
The so-called theater defense system, meant to protect U.S.
troops and bases
from missile attacks, was the fourth successful downing of an
incoming missile
and the first to destroy a low-flying cruise missile.
"We had a successful intercept,'' Jen Canaff, a spokeswoman for
the
Pentagon's Ballistic Missile Defense Organization, told Reuters
news agency
after the Patriot tracked and destroyed an MQM-107 cruise
missile over the
White Sands Missile Test Range in New Mexico.
Canaff said that unlike the three earlier tests that shot down
high-flying Hera
ballistic missiles at the very edge of space, Saturday's
successful test occurred
at an altitude below 40,000 feet.
In combating cruise missiles, altitude is a key factor since the
slow-flying but
highly accurate cruise missiles attack at altitudes as low as 50
feet above the
Earth. The Pentagon would not reveal the exact altitude of the
downed cruise
missile.
