WEST MONROE, La. (AP) -- Drawing an armed, camouflaged soldier earned a
third-grader an in-school suspension at a West Monroe elementary school.

Lenwill Elementary School Principal Edward Davis described the drawing that
drew the punishment Thursday as upsetting. The soldier was holding a canteen
in one hand and a knife in the other.

The 8-year-old honor student also drew a fort with a list of stocked
inventory. Among items listed on the drawing were 5,000 knives, 200 M-16s,
109 pistols and 67 first aid kits.

"It had hand grenades, knives and guns," Davis said. "We have zero tolerance
for drawings with guns. We can't tolerate anything that has to do with guns
or knives."

Raleigh Walker said his son drew the picture as a tribute to a relative who
was in the Army. The younger Walker showed the picture to a student in class
and his teacher intervened.

"The teacher said (Walker's son) had the class upset before class even
started," Walker said. "My son was upset all yesterday. I had to explain to
him that owning guns and being in the Army is not bad."

Walker added that he didn't see how the illustration was upsetting or
threatening. In fact, he sent a copy of the drawing to the Ouachita Parish
School Board's office for a second opinion.

Willie Isby, director of Child Welfare and Attendance for the Ouachita
Parish School System, read more into the picture.

"It is a violent arrangement here," Isby said. "The punishment is not that
bad in this case, in light of the fact that we have been having all these
killings in schools."

Walker disagreed.

"It (the drawing) is not someone killing someone and it's not a school,"
Walker said. "He should have been punished for doing something not
pertaining to school work, not for a drawing of an Army guy."

Davis said the child's drawing didn't warrant a full suspension, so he was
placed on in-school suspension.

"It is a day where they do school work at school instead of sitting at
home," Davis said. "They shouldn't be drawing in school. They need to be
doing school work."

{My Comment: Of course HE never drew pictures when he should have been
studying - Educated hypocrisy???? Difficult to believe these are the people
setting life standards for our children!]
