Porn Site Operator Who Netted $37 Million In Fraud Scheme Heads For Jail.

Kenneth Taves of Malibu, CA operated a porn site that provided
subscribers with access to pornography for $19.95 a month. However
the service did not turn up much money so he turned to a more
lucarative way to raise money. He obtained the credit card numbers of
four million consumers that had bought items from merchants with
accounts at Charter Pacific Bank in Agoura Hills, California. Taves
then took many of these numbers and submitted them to his merchant
service with instructions to charge each account $19.95. At least
800,000 people, many who never had been online, found out they were
being charged for access to a porn site! Complaints to the Federal
Trade Commission in 1999 set off alarm bells. The FBI joined the
investigation and found Taves had laundered to money to offshore
accounts in the Cayman Islands and the South Pacific island nation of
Vanuatu. $4 million went to a house in Malibu. In November 2000, the
government seized $8 million and expect to recover as much as $25-$30
million. Taves plead guilty on Monday and faces a maximum penalty of
30 years in prison. He will be sentenced in April.
