1st U.N. conference on small arms to be held in N.Y. in 2001

NEW YORK, Oct. 30 (Kyodo) - The United Nations will host the first conference
on controlling trade in small arms in July next year, U.N. sources said
Monday.

The conference, scheduled for July 9-20, was proposed by Japan to the General
Assembly's disarmament committee earlier this month.

The definition of small arms is ''a weapon that can be carried by one
person,'' and the conference particularly aims to restrict the illegal
transfer of weaponry such as machine guns and grenades.

The conference had been tentatively set to take place in Geneva, but the
venue was moved to New York after the Swiss government declined to serve as
the host country, the sources said.

Using that definition a nuclear warhead would be a small arm.
