Police officer in custody over teenager's death

An Italian police officer accused of shooting a teenager
who was driving his scooter without a helmet has been
taken into custody in Naples.

Mario Castellano was shot to death last week when he ran
a police checkpoint set up to enforce a recent law
mandating helmets for Italy's nine million scooter and
motorcycle riders.

The teenager reportedly loathed helmets because they
flattened his gelled hairstyle and he had been ticketed
for violating the law a number of times.

His killing provoked scattered riots, calls to boycott
helmets and several vigils.

State police officer Tommaso Leone has been taken into
custody on suspicion of homicide, the Naples prosecutor's
office said.

Leone, who has said the shooting was an accident, was
being held without bail in a military prison.
