Because that produces an unsightly command window as well as the
desired xemacs window. That's what all the WinMain etc. stuff is
there to defeat.

machine, adding openssh, doing ssh-user-config, and connecting via ssh
to my server, all in under 10 minutes with 0 (zero, none) fuss,
confusion or hiccups.

_thought_ I was running 1.3.22, and so did part of cygcheck, but other
parts showed 1.3.20, so I re-installed and all is now OK. Not clear
to me how this happened, but thanks v. much for steering me in the
right direction.

Am I the only one who has found the mirrors very slow to get synced
lately? None of the recently announcement packages are available at
any of the mirrors I've checked, and over the last few weeks it's
sometimes taken two or three days for things to appear.

I use ssh port forwarding to achieve this (if I understand your
request correctly), i.e.
ssh -L 25:[remote system]:25 [remote system]
and then tell your mailer that localhost is your SMTP server.
